Frequently Asked Questions
Got questions? No problem. Below, you’ll find some of the more frequently asked questions we hear at Chesapeake Foot And Ankle Institute.
If you don’t see your question, feel free to get in touch with us. We’re here to help.

When should I see a doctor for bunions?
You should see a doctor for bunions if you’re experiencing persistent pain, difficulty walking, or if the bunion is affecting your daily activities. Additionally, if the bunion becomes red, swollen, or shows signs of infection, it’s important to seek medical attention. Early treatment can help prevent further complications.
What are the most common pediatric foot injuries?
The most common pediatric foot injuries include sprains, fractures, and strains, often caused by sports or physical activities. Other frequent issues are bruises, cuts, and growth plate injuries. It’s important to monitor for signs of swelling, pain, or difficulty walking and seek medical attention if needed to ensure proper healing.
Do I need a referal from my family doctor to see a podiatrist?
In Virginia, the need for a referral to see a podiatrist depends on your health insurance plan. HMO plans usually require a referral from your primary care doctor to visit a specialist, such as a podiatrist. However, PPO plans and Medicare typically do not require a referral for specialist consultations. It’s recommended to check your insurance policy or contact your provider to clarify the referral requirements for podiatric care.
How can I prevent ingrown toenails?
To prevent ingrown toenails, make sure to trim your toenails straight across, avoiding rounded edges. Wear properly fitting shoes that provide enough room for your toes, and keep your feet clean and dry. Additionally, avoid injuring your toes and take care when trimming or caring for your nails.
Do you accept Medicaid or other insurance plans?
We take most major insurances, however, we are continuously adding new insurances. Please call us so we can check for you, to confirm coverage, and to schedule an appointment. We will also have self pay rates for patients who do not have insurance or are considered out of network.
How long does recovery from a foot or ankle fracture typically take?
Recovery from a foot or ankle fracture typically takes 6 to 8 weeks, depending on the severity of the injury and the treatment method. In some cases, full recovery may take longer, especially if surgery is required or if there are complications. Physical therapy may also be needed to restore strength and mobility.
